Dew of the sea.  Rosemary’s name came about through the latin for ros (dew) and marinus (sea).  Hardy and tenacious, this beloved herb is symbolic of remembrance.  And its essential oil helps impart this trait to those of us who use it.

Going back to ancient Greece, rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis CT cineole) was burned as incense and over the course of time, came to be used to ward off the devil, along with fortifying homes and their inhabitants against all manner of bad or wicked things and cleansing the air.

The Lamiaceae family would need a huge table at Thanksgiving Dinner!  It includes basil, clary sage, dorado azul, hyssop, lavandin (Lavandula x hybrid), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), marjoram, melissa, mountain savory, oregano, patchouli, peppermint, rosemary, sage, thyme and vitex.

Picture the ones of these that you’re familiar with – the common culinary herbs.  They are highly aromatic and just bruising them with your fingers or brushing past them if they are growing in your kitchen garden will release their invigorating fresh oil-scented fragrance and give an instant “It’s awesome to be alive!” vim and vigour when you breathe in their herbaceous wake.

Steam distilled from the leaves of rosemary bushes typically harvested throughout Tunisia, Morocco and Spain, rosemary essential oil is high in the constituent eucalyptol (1,8-Cineole), having a range of 38 to 55%.

Eucalyptol is an oxide.  Oxides are oxygenated hydrocarbons.  They generally come from terpenes, alcohols or ketones that have been oxidised.  1,8-Cineole/eucalyptol is abundant in rosemary, eucalyptus and thyme which are all top of the pops for cleansing and clearing, invigorating and refreshing, and especially vital in the winter months when there’s so much dodgy stuff floating around out there.

When you’re feeling like you need to sharpen your wits – studying, researching, learning, prepping for an important presentation – place half a dozen drops of Young Living Rosemary essential oil into your diffuser and turn up the dial.  Add some lemon or peppermint for extra zing.  (We always choose Young Living essential oils for their authenticity and genuine purity you can trust and count on.  Make sure you’re getting true value for money by choosing oils like theirs that really do work.  You can check out the Seed to Seal process and why we love them so much in this short video.)

young-living-rosemaryI absolutely love using rosemary essential oil as a daily pick-me-up for my hair.

You can keep it simple and apply a couple of drops to your palm, swirl with your fingertips and massage your fingertips through your hair and over your scalp.  Breathe in deeply as you go and you’ll be picking up the aromatic benefits as well as those volatile molecules travel into your body via your sense of smell to energise you, keep your attention where it should be and have you feeling vital.

Another option is to mix rosemary with argan oil and massage it into your scalp and hair before you go to bed for a nurturing boost as often as you like.  Depending on your hair type, you might want to shampoo it the next morning, or it could be fine to leave in for added body and texture.  Include a touch of Young Living Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) as desired.  Lavender and rosemary are both awesome oils for the hair.

Rosemary essential oil can also be inhaled directly from the bottle and diluted for topical application with a beautiful quality carrier oil like Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex or any pure vegetable/fruit oil like jojoba, sweet almond or olive.   Apply some over your chakras and on the soles of your feet (it’s generally safe to apply any oil to the soles of your feet as the skin is least sensitive there and its benefits will travel where they are needed within you).

And rosemary is one of Young Living’s Vitality oils that can be safely added to food and drink for extra flavour and vibrance.  Please be sure to follow the labels and only ever add essential oil to food or drink when the label clearly states you can do so.

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.

Rosemary carries a few extra safety cautions: it’s not for use with children under say 4 years of age and should be avoided if high blood pressure is present or certain medications are being used.  As always, check with your healthcare professional for possible contraindications and interactions with medications.

Young Living includes rosemary essential oil in many potent blends such as its Inner Defense™ softgels (I swear by these every day as a general maintenance support), Melrose™ (this is one of my staples: super-handy after gardening for cleansing insect bites and those pesky scrapes and irritations you can pick up without even realising at the time), Thieves® (the cornerstone of its highly effective natural range of household and personal care cleaning products), Clarity™ (fabulous for studying and any time you need – well, clarity) and Transformation™ (magnificent for helping you to move forwards with major changes in your life).   All of these are wonderful ways to incorporate rosemary into your day along with using it as a single oil.
