Are you sage about sage essential oils?  Today, let’s take a look at three of them: common sage, clary sage and Spanish sage.

All of them are members of the very large Lamiaceae botanical family, which includes many culinary herbs like basil, rosemary, sages and thyme.  Walk through a garden of these plants brushing past them with your fingertips and this will release their oils and fragrance into the air for a delicious aromatic feast.

The essential oils of sage (Salvia officinalis), clary sage (Salvia sclarea) and Spanish sage/sage lavender (Salvia lavandulifolia) are not all distilled from the same parts of their plants.   Sage and Spanish sage are steam distilled from the leaves whereas clary sage is steam distilled from the flowering plant.

Not only that, but they have different profiles of key constituents, all of which harmonise together to create different aromatic and energetic influences.  Below we’ve listed them with their highest chemical constituents:

Sage (Salvia officinalis)   alpha-thujone and 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol)

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)  linalyl acetate and linalol

Spanish sage/sage lavender (Salvia lavandulifolia)  1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and alpha-pinene

A sacred herb to ancient Romans, salvia is derived from the word for ‘salvation’, which gives us a tremendous sense of how important and valued the sage herbs were to this civilisation.

Sage (Salvia officinalis) is wonderful for the second (pelvic) chakra which is where your ability to manifest and your vitality are governed from an energetic perspective, and also where your reproductive organs are located.  It’s prudent to avoid use if epileptic or suffering from high blood pressure.  This oil can be diffused or inhaled directly from the bottle or your cupped hands, and diluted 1:1 with a pure carrier oil for direct application to the skin over chakra points.  Young Living includes sage essential oil in its Dragon Time Bath & Shower Gel/Massage Oil, the essential oil blends EndoFlex, Envision, Magnify Your Purpose and Mister.

The seeds of Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) were used in the long distant past to create a thick substance by soaking them in water, and this was in turn used as an eye-wash, to draw splinters and nurture the skin.  When diffused, clary sage is a beautiful essential oil for chilling out and relaxing, especially when under the weather from PMS or feeling somewhat snappish.  Young Living includes clary sage in its Dragon Time products and essential oil blends EndoGize, Into the Future, Lady Sclareol, SclarEssence, Transformation and various other blends and products.

Spanish sage/sage lavender (Salvia lavandulifolia) essential oil has a fragrance somewhat akin to rosemary, which is also high in the key constituents of Spanish sage: 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and alpha-pinene.  Both are fabulous for haircare and energising your thoughts.  Like common sage, it’s prudent to avoid use if epileptic or suffering from high blood pressure.  Young Living at this time does not sell Spanish sage as a single oil, but it’s included in its essential oil blends Awaken, Harmony, Lady Sclareol, Oola Balance and SclarEssence and these are all lovely ways to enjoy it.  Young Living Harmony™ is one of my favourite oils to use as a personal fragrance.  On men and women alike, it smells amazing and is a wonderful way to harmonise your feelings and outlook every day.

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
