“Make New Year’s goals. Dig within, and discover what you would like to have happen in your life this year. This helps you do your part. It is an affirmation that you’re interested in fully living life in the year to come.”  Melody Beattie

I stopped making New Year’s resolutions for a while.   When reflecting on this, it dawned on me that I see the word ‘resolutions’ as a negative – perhaps because so many people talk about New Year’s resolutions as something that’s doomed to failure, like setting Clayton’s goals.

Let’s face it, how often do you hear people talking about how well they stuck to their New Year’s resolutions?  Usually they are shared as jokes with “I hear you!” eye rolling.  I get the feeling making New Year’s resolutions has become well and truly passé.

But I like to buck trends, so why not join me in reclaiming New Year’s resolutions with the dedication and spirit in which they were first intended.  And let’s harness the power of essential oils to make them stick!

I’ve put together a simple and enjoyable process you might like to follow.  If so, light up some beeswax candles, grab your journal and some loose sheets of paper and let’s go.

Set the Mood by Diffusing

If you’re still burning essential oils, please buy a diffuser as one of your top New Year’s priorities.  I’ve written about this at length here.  In a nutshell, heat damages fine quality oils and changes their structure.  You’re not only wasting the money you spent on top quality oils but you could be doing more harm than good when inhaling them.   Diffusing turns oils into a microfine mist without any heating.   You’ll be astounded at the difference.

You could choose any one of a bunch of relaxing oils to get you into a positive, receptive mood, or you could run with Young Living Abundance™ (includes feel-good orange and cinnamon, said to attract wealth)  or Joy™ (the name says it all).

Before starting, apply Young Living Valor™ to the soles of your feet.  It’s a beautiful blend to use whenever you’re about to work on your feelings.  In lieu of that, try Highest Potential™ or lavender (the ‘universal’ oil and great for overall balancing).

There are no hard and fast rules with where to apply these blends.  Your wrists, chakra points and behind your ears are all great spots.  Go with wherever feels right.  Just be sure you’re following the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils

Young Living Gratitude™

In your journal, write ten things you’ve been grateful for in the past 12 months.  (If you don’t have a journal, no worries.  Just write them on a sheet of paper.)

Reflect on how they came about.  Some will be straight out awesome.  Others might have originated in a situation or incident that felt very lousy at the time but led to some kind of good.  Maybe you learned a valuable lesson.  Or the importance of saying No.  Perhaps you discovered the wisdom of, “If in doubt, do nothing.”  Or the opposite!  Give thanks for all of it, because everything that happened this past year has made you stronger and brought you to where you are today.

Young Living Release™

On a loose sheet of paper, write down everything you want less of in your life.  Take everything you’re angry, hurt and disappointed about and let the piece of paper have it.  Don’t filter.  Mrs Manners will never clap her eyes on your cussing.  While you’re at it, write down the shoulds and expectations you know deep down aren’t serving you.  And how about those tired old dreams and fantasies that are truly past their Use By Date?  Write them down and let them go, too.  It’s incredibly liberating!  Don’t re-read what you’ve written.  All done?  Then tear it up or burn it (safely!), throw away the remnants and don’t look back.

Young Living Acceptance™

What about the things that try as you might, you can’t walk away from, let go of, or change?  In your journal (or on another loose sheet you can keep someplace as a reminder), nut out ways you can change your feelings about the situation.  Whenever something feels like it’s beyond your control, you can change your thoughts about it to reclaim your power and manage it more easily.

Acceptance is also fiercely important if you tend to give more than you allow yourself to receive.   Let the flow come to you, and allow others their time on the giving side of the giving-and-receiving cycle.

Young Living Hope™

Some say hope is a wasted emotion, but I believe that’s only true if you don’t marry it with action.  If you don’t let yourself get your hopes up over things, you’re affirming that you don’t believe you deserve to get what you want.  With hope comes hurt – sometimes, you won’t get what you hoped for.  But wouldn’t you rather deal with the pain of that than deny your heart the chance to get what it longs for?

Young Living Into the Future™

Now it’s time for the really fun stuff.  Imagine your future self.  Where are you? What are you doing?  Who are you with?  Let yourself dream and create a simple mud map of what you can do to make those things tangible.  Choose a Top 3.  Write down just one immediate action step you will take for each of those three dreams/goals.  Open your diary and schedule each step to be done within the next week.   Each time you complete each step, schedule the next step towards that dream/goal in your diary.  Keep on repeating and you’re on your way.   When it’s a habit, look at the bigger picture and include some medium and long range planning.  It will be easier by then.

Wishing you a New Year that’s all you hope and take action for, and more.
