On the scale of nada to nirvana, how’s your dedication to meditation going?

Hong Kuai essential oil is on your side.  And if you’re not keen on meditating but would love its benefits, great news: it’s still on your side.

This beautiful, centering single oil is precious and somewhat rare.

It’s produced by steam distillation of the wood from fallen logs of Hong Kuai trees in Taiwan, which are protected and live from 1,000 to 2,000 years at dizzying heights in mountainous rainforests.

Every tree ring has its own deposit of that year’s essential oil. Isn’t it incredible to think that using this essential oil is like opening a time capsule rich with precious ingredients from ancient times?

These magnificent trees grow upwards of 50 metres tall.  And it is illegal to cut them down.  So the wood can only be sourced when it has fallen naturally, as can happen through typhoons for instance, when landslides carry the fallen logs into streams and rivers.  Young Living is licensed to collect such logs for distillation, so you have the peace of mind of knowing you’re using an oil that has been sustainably and ethically produced.

If you ever wonder about the price tag, hopefully this helps put things in context.  And it’s as if nature knows how special her oils are.  They are so potent, just a drop or two is needed.  A 5mL bottle of oil goes a surprisingly long way.

Akin to the Hinoki tree of Southern Japan which is also from the Cupressaceae family and highly resistant to decay, the wood of the Hong Kuai tree is likewise valued for building temples. So much so, its name means, ‘the respected trees for the temple-building society’.

The scent of Hong Kuai (Chamaecyparis formosensis) is clean, woody, strong and earthy. Aromatically, its fragrance is calming and centering, and inspires clarity, intuition and action.  It is tremendous for meditation thanks to its very high levels of sesquiterpenes.  In fact, it’s the highest in sesquiterpenes of all Young Living essential oils.

Sesquiterpenes are constituents of essential oils.  Being incredibly complex little gifts of nature, authentic essential oils contain a huge array of different constituents, generally between 200 and 500.  No two oils are alike.  (Just like us.  And snowflakes.  And anything made by nature, when you stop to think about it.)

The potential effects of an essential oil lie in its unique combination of constituents and how they interact with each other — their synergy.

When it comes to the specifics of sesquiterpenes, several thousand different kinds are found in essential oils.  Guaiene, caryophyllene and bisabolen are just a few of their spelling bee-defying names.

Sesquiterpenes are soothing generally to mind and body.  They are especially well suited to being inhaled and diffused, as our sense of smell is a direct route to the limbic region, which is the emotional control area of the brain.  It makes sense that this teams so well with meditating and doing yoga.

  • If you don’t have a diffuser running while you’re meditating, try it next time and feel for yourself how it can enhance the effects.  Some other oils high in sesquiterpenes are sandalwood, frankincense, cedarwood and patchouli, all commonly used to enhance yoga and meditation and all beautiful, too
  • You can also apply a drop of Hong Kuai or other oils for meditation and spirituality to the palm of your hands, smooth them together and cup over your nose.  Inhale deeply before starting your session
  • 1-2 drops of Hong Kuai can be applied directly to chakras, your temples, forehead, back of the neck.  Dilution with a drop of carrier oil will help it go a little further and help with any possible skin sensitivities
  • When journaling and going within, Hong Kuai is a peaceful accompaniment
  • And it’s great for boosting confidence — possibly due to helping you to feel centred — so inhale directly from the bottle and apply a little behind your ears immediately before heading into a situation where you want to feel extra sure of yourself

For a masculine cologne that’s highly appealing, blend Hong Kuai with Idaho Blue Spruce and ylang ylang. Over 90% of women love for their man to smell good.  So to the gents reading: take this combo for a spin.  Not only will it help you feel good, the women around you will give you an ‘A’ for effort. Let us know how you go!

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.

All Young Living oils are guaranteed pure from seed to seal, unlike so many brands out there in the marketplace.  That’s why we choose them.  You really do get what you pay for.  You can check it out with your own eyes in this short video.
