Lemongrass is widely known, but how about red lemongrass?  That’s the common name for Xiang Mao (pronounced ‘Shung Mao’).

You’d easily think from the closeness of their botanical names that essential oils of lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) and red lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) would have similar key constituents and properties.  Let’s take a closer look!

They are both members of the Poaceae family and steam distilled from the grassy leaves, but lemongrass and Xiang Mao have only one key constituent in common: geraniol.  And it’s not a primary constituent in either, though Xiang Mao contains higher levels of this monoterpene than lemongrass does.

Funnily enough, in spite of their varying chemical profiles, lemongrass and Xiang Mao essential oils have quite a bit in common.

Both oils are known for their fresh, cleansing properties.

And when it comes to aromatic influence, Xiang Mao and lemongrass both heighten awareness and give a sense of purification.  They are energising beauties in your diffuser!  Your home will soon smell sweetly fresh and you’ll feel enlightened and uplifted all the while.

And you’ll be inhaling 100% pure fumes with not one skerrick of synthetics or potentially toxic nasties hidden in the scent.  Using Young Living’s authentic and genuine essential oils is of priceless value for peace of mind: you’ll never ever have to second guess your choices or worry about quality.  Young Living Xiang Mao is harvested and distilled on fertiliser-free, pristine land, and is guaranteed pure with Young Living’s Seed to Seal® process.

If you’re going to a group yoga session, before starting:

  • apply a few drops of this blend (or the single oils) to your palms
  • smooth your palms together and cup over your nose, breathing deeply
  • apply another drop to your wrists and press gently together
  • inhale the delicious oils again for good measure, then
  • press to the edges of your ears and to your forehead (Always avoid getting essential oils in your eyes and ears – they are definitely not meant to go there)

Dilution is generally not needed unless your skin is particularly sensitive – but as always, when you use an oil for the first time, test first to assess your own needs.

Try adding a few drops of Xiang Mao to Young Living Thieves Household Cleanser or any of the Thieves cleaning / home care products (including Thieves Dish Soap and Thieves Laundry Soap) for an extra-lemony fragrance variation to even further boost the cleaning power.

And Xiang Mao combines with Young Living Bath Gel Base and V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex for a nurturing and comforting shower or massage.
