Cardamom essential oil is an ingredient in one of the first Young Living blends I ever tried: Clarity™.

While commonly known as a spice, it’s not so commonly known as an essential oil.  You might be wondering what it’s good for.  So let’s take a look at some background and if it sparks your interest, please head to your trusty essential oils reference book to find out more of the nitty gritty.

Cardamom’s strong scent has a touch of lemon and mint about it, along with a mildly smoky odour.

You’ll find cardamom in lots of Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, including desserts.

Cardamom has also been used traditionally for medicinal purposes for time eternal.  It even scores a mention in an ancient Egyptian list of prescriptions and remedies called the Ebers Papyrus, dating back to the 16th century BC.

As for the essential oil, it’s produced by steam distillation from the seeds.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) belongs to the Zingiberaceae botanical family. This is the same family as ginger (Zingiber officinale) but cardamom essential oil is higher in the oxide 1.8-Cineole (Eucalyptol) and has quite a different composition of key constituents.

Oils abundant in 1.8-Cineole include eucalyptus globulus, rosemary and thyme, all with fresh and invigorating scents.  Likewise cardamom has a vitality that’s wonderfully uplifting.  Along with Clarity™, Young Living includes cardamom essential oil in its Transformation™ blend.  Cardamom’s herbaceous zing makes it a perfect inclusion.

Today, we’ve rustled up a healthful raw recipe for you that includes ground cardamom spice and turned up the flavour dial with Young Living Tangerine essential oil, which is suitable for adding to food.   You’ll need to prepare this ahead so the chia seeds have plenty of time to plump up and do their thing. *Please note: not all oils are suitable for ingesting. Please only do so if the label says you can do so.
