Someone once told me cricket is the sound of summer holidays. I don’t watch much cricket, but I got what they meant.

Even if you were last pick for sporting teams at school, you’re probably happy enough to have a go when the bat, ball and makeshift stumps are arranged for a game of backyard cricket. And Australia Day is the culmination of all those matches you’ve had a crack at during the festive season.

Put a bunch of earnest but potentially inept people together, add a few beers into the equation and it’s a recipe for slapstick videos and an increased likelihood of knocks, scrapes and clangers.

Here are our top 6 essential oil tips for backyard cricket to help your next match run smoothly.

And for a bunch of other tips for Australia Day in general, including cooling hot skin, keeping mozzies at bay and a berry-boosted lamington recipe, please click here.

  1. Keep your eye on the ball with a blend of authentic peppermint and rosemary essential oils (Young Living Clarity™ is a great pre-mixed blend). These oils are fantastic for keeping your wits about you
  2. Keep Young Living Deep Relief™ Roll-on or genuine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) on hand to take the edge off the sting of errant cricket balls or clashes when two of you both have eyes for catching the same ball. The roll-on way of applying the oils is super handy when you’re out and about. It’s wise to wash your hands after applying essential oils so you don’t accidentally get them in your eyes, and using the roll-on conveniently sidesteps that
  3. You’ve gone for a dramatic slide to prevent a run-out? Awesome effort, but you’ll need to cleanse the scraped skin. Do it when everyone’s distracted with a tea break if you’re worried you’ll look like a wuss. Authentic lemon essential oil and melaleuca alternifolia applied directly to the area are wonderful assistants when your 12th man or woman is tending to you
  4. Too competitive for an enjoyable, relaxed match? Inhale lavender or Young Living Peace & Calming™ to dial yourself down a notch or few
  5. Not competitive enough for a stimulating, vigorous match? Inhale peppermint or Young Living Motivation™ to dial yourself up a notch or few
  6. Feeling like a party pooper and not wanting to play ball? Inhale Young Living Gratitude™ and take a look around. Where else would you rather be today? Is it really that important? In this moment, there’s an excellent chance you’re exactly where you need to be

So there you have it, our backyard cricket essential oils guide. Use it as a mud map and get creative with your own ideas.  Have fun and experiment.  As long as you’re using the oils safely, you can’t go wrong.

Oh, and when you’re home and need to deal with those grass stains? Assuming you didn’t play cricket in your silk delicates, rub undiluted Thieves® Household Cleaner into the stain with a toothbrush until it lifts, then rinse well and wash as usual. If you don’t have any Thieves™ Household Cleaner on hand, open a capsule of natural digestive enzymes, make a paste with a dash of water, apply to the stain, leave to sit for quarter of an hour then rinse and wash as usual. And if you don’t have that, good old vinegar and bicarb is worth a try, too. Dab the vinegar onto the stain with a sponge until the stain goes. If the stain is tenacious, make a paste of vinegar and bicarb, brush into the stain then wash as usual.

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.

Not all oils are created equal. Far from it. Quality varies immensely, so please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living. Discover why we love them so much in this short video.

Enjoy the good oil daily.
