If you want to see life through rose-coloured glasses, open a bottle of Young Living Rose essential oil.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” said William Shakespeare.  True for the flower, but when it comes to the essential oil of rose, let’s make sure it bears the name Rosa damascena and has been handled gently in a way that will produce the highest possible quality, lest it smell sweet but not have the same beneficial effects.  That’s why I’ve specified Young Living Rose oil here, because I know I can always trust their absolute purity and integrity to give me an oil that’s the best possible on the planet.  You can check out this short video to see with your own eyes.

In the olden days, rose was produced by a process called enfleurage (the French word for flower is fleur).  This entailed using a vegetable oil and the petals and pressing to extract the essence of the flower.

In today’s world, Rosa damascena by Young Living is distilled from the exotic Bulgarian rose in a two-part process, and has a different fragrance and aromatic influence from Rosa centifolia which hails from Morocco and is much lighter and greener in scent.  A key difference in terms of their effects are owing to their different constituents.  Rosa damascena is heady and intense, high in the monoterpene citronellol (24 to 50% range) whereas Rosa centifolia is high in phenylethanol which has a hint of gardenia and hyacinth scent to it.  And of course, these differences in constituents result in different effects and benefits.

Along with citronellol, Rosa damascena includes a goodly percentage of geraniol (10 to 22%).  Geranium is also high in citronellol (25 to 36%) and contains 10 to 18% of geraniol, making it a common substitute for Rosa damascena (Bulgarian) rose oil.  While their two highest constituents are similar in ratios, rose is felt to have a higher vibration, which could also help to account for the lightness of spirit it brings.

We can dig into the roots of ancient history to find out when rose was first used as more than just a beautiful thing to behold and inhale.  Thousands of years ago, an Arab physician named Avicenna distilled rose to extract its oil and studied and wrote about both rose oil and the exquisite, gentle floral water that came about from the processing.  So its benefits have been recognised for longer than we can even imagine.

The universal symbol of love and romance, especially in the passionate colour of red, roses are also hugely popular for all occasions to bring cheer and good spirits, and that’s what the essential oil will do for you, too.

If you’re not sure which colour rose to gift to someone – fun fact: yellow roses are said to represent jealousy in the language of flowers – then you could always take that risk out of the equation and treat someone to a bottle of Young Living Rose essential oil instead.  One tiny drop will linger beautifully on their skin, and one tiny 5mL bottle will be bringing them pleasure long, long after a bunch of fresh roses has gone.
