Did you know the French expression for window shopping translates is ‘licking windows’?  When it comes to chocolate shops, it’s easy to see how that came about!

We’re doing our best to encourage healthy choices here. So our recipe for Raw Chocolate Orange Essential Oil Truffles is a quick, simple and nutritious alternative to heading out to your local chocolatier for a fix.

Not only that, but we’re devoted essential oil users and any excuse to include them is a good one.  So we’ve switched in Young Living Orange oil to replace the orange extract used in the original recipe.  Young Living essential oils are of such exemplary quality, they can be added to foods when the label indicates it’s safe to do so.  Please note: It’s extremely important to only use oils this way when indicated on the label.

When you have access to the most beautiful essential oils on the planet, it’s kind of a no brainer to use them instead of an extract that might include colours and additives including propylene glycol, a known irritant.  Sadly, I’m not kidding you.  Check the labels on extracts and flavourings in your pantry and you might be alarmed to see it there.  I was.

In colour therapy, orange is joyous and fuels optimism, activity and energy.  And the essential oil has the same effects.  Combine that with feel-good benefits of raw cacao powder and you’re in for a happy day!

Amongst many awesome things things, raw cacao is esteemed for:

  • phenethylamine (triggers the release of endorphins)
  • anandamide (the ‘bliss’ molecule)
  • boosting serotonin (calming)
  • polyphenol antioxidants (the potent ingredient in green tea and red wine)
  • magnesium (for vitality and muscles)
  • sulfur (for skin and hair)

If cooking isn’t your forte, an easy and tasty way to include cacao in your day is with Young Living’s Slique™ Tea Cinnamon Oolong Cacao and Slique™ Bars include cacao and all you need do is boil the kettle or open a packet.  Click here to join and order.

Raw Chocolate Orange Truffles

Makes around 26 truffles.  Recipe adapted from The Great Uncooking

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup almonds
  • ½ cup pecans or hazelnuts
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • 1 cup fresh dates, de-seeded
  • 1 tblsp organic lacuma powder (replace with nuts if desired)
  • 1/4 cup organic raw cacao powder
  • zest of one orange
  • 5 drops Young Living Orange essential oil (or include total 5 drops and play with these flavour variations: ginger oil, peppermint oil, spearmint oil)

PREPARATION

Reserve I tblsp of cacao for dusting.

Blend in a high powered food processor, starting with the nuts, then adding the rest of the dry ingredients and lastly the dates and essential oil.  If your food processor isn’t powerful, add the dates one at a time.

Stop as soon as the mixture is well blended.

With damp hands, roll the mixture into balls and sprinkle with a little cacao powder to add that distinctive truffle look and finish.  Eat one immediately to test.  You might want to double check with a second one.  One can never have too much quality assurance, surely.

Not all oils are created equal.  Quality varies immensely, so please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living.  Discover why we love them so much in this short video.

Enjoy the good oil daily.
