When it comes to pine essential oil, the Scots would say “Guid gear comes in sma’ bulk” – as in, “Good things come in small packages.”

Pinus sylvestris is also called Scots Pine and is the national tree of Scotland.  Very fitting, given they need good sets of lungs for making their bagpipes sing.  Diffusing this respiratory-friendly oil would be a fine tradition in every such home.

Pine essential oil is another prime example of the need for absolute guaranteed purity from a company you can trust.  We always choose Young Living: learn in this short video why we love them so much.

Pine is one of the most adulterated oils on the market and you’ll find it incredible but true that lots of pine oils in the marketplace are plumped up with turpentine, which is low cost, so of course it helps the bottom line of the unscrupulous people selling such pine oil as ‘pure’.  And turpentine is potentially very hazardous to our health so it’s a double whammy.  Not only are you being cheated if you buy adulterated pine oil, but it’s quite likely to be damaging to your health.  Please do take care to be sure you’re really getting what you pay for.  Even highly trained professionals can be fooled by synthetics and adulterated oils, so only go to the brands who have 3rd party impartial testing and are rigorous with their scientific standards and research, such as Young Living.

The Pinus sylvestris tree is a coniferous evergreen that’s extremely tough and hardy (like the Scots!) and actually thrives in rugged conditions like sandy soils, peat bogs, hard-to-reach rocky outcrops and the edges of forests.

This tree is a member of the Pinaceae family along with firs (including white and douglas fir), spruce and cedarwood, and all these are valuable when it comes to keeping the air around your home fresh and energised.  And they all make you feel like you’re living in a forest, which can be a welcome mental escape from the daily grind!

Pine essential oil is steam distilled from the needles and generally sourced from Austria, the United States and Canada.  Hippocrates, father of Western medicine, was very interested in its effects back in his day.

Traditionally its needles have been stuffed under bedding and into mattresses as a deterrent to lice and fleas and added to warm baths to combat general feelings of fatigue.

Exceptionally high in alpha-pinene, this naturally-occurring constituent is both energising and soothing and fabulous for a bunch of things.  I encourage you to look into it further and you’ll discover plenty more reasons to use this fresh and revitalising essential oil.

Pine essential oil is a kindred spirit to eucalyptus globulus and these oils combine beautifully to enhance each other’s potency and benefits.

When applying pine oil topically, it’s best to dilute at least 1:1 with a top quality carrier oil like Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex, jojoba or sweet almond oil.  For a lovely warming and relaxing massage before and after exercising, try a dilution of say 1 to 3 drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil and see how you respond.  Again, purity is vital.  We can’t say it enough!

Dulited pine essential oil is a wonderful cleanser for oily skin and can be added to your favourite natural facial moisturiser.  A little goes a long way so go gently and monitor your skin’s particular response as we’re all so individual when it comes to these things.

Young Living includes pine essential oil in its blends Grounding and RC, so this gives us valuable clues as to what it’s good for.  Grounding is a beautiful oil to use all year around when you want to feel – as the name says – grounded.  RC is exceptionally wonderful for diffusing in the colder months and keeping the air in your home or office feeling and smelling fresh and clean.  Both of these blends are also wonderful applied to the soles of your feet morning and night whenever you want to feel warm and comforted.

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
