I was talking with a friend earlier today about my recent moving of home, office, business and life, and he said, “Hey, did you remember to put your new number onto the Do Not Call register?”

And I understand where he’s coming from. For a long time, I used to screen calls so that I could avoid people trying to sell me things while I’m relaxing at home.

That was until a friend of mine — different friend — said to me one day, “I love telemarketers!” (She’s a Young Living distributor, like me.)

“Do tell!” I said. I like a good story.

After she told me her story, I decided to try it out for myself. And now, when the phone rings and it’s someone I don’t know (quite often in another country) wanting to sell me something (most often something I don’t want), it goes something like this.

I’ll let them talk for a little while.

If they don’t seem to have great people skills, I’ll tell them politely that I’m not interested and hang up.

But if they are friendly and warm and genuine — and yes, plenty are — and if they seem somewhat skilled at what they do, I’ll start asking them questions to learn more about them and what inspired them to choose this line of work. Questions like:

“You’re great at this. How long have you been telemarketing?”

“What do you like about it?”

“Do you feel like you’re being appreciated? Paid well? What kind of flexibility do you have with hours?”

After chatting, if I’m impressed with their manner and attitude, I suggest that with their kinds of skills and nature, they’d be great at what I do. If they are happy to hear how simple it is to start their own Young Living business part time, at their own pace, I ask if they’d like to give me their email address or phone number so we can talk further.

Often it goes no further than that, but often during the course of our chatting, we discover at least a few things that appeal to them about such a flexible and low-cost way of starting their very own part-time business. And a business in such a positive and rewarding area as ours: helping others create more abundance and put a spring in their step, in an industry that makes the planet a greener and more natural place to be.

At worst, by having a friendly chat with them rather than hanging up in their ear, you’ve made someone’s day by acknowledging them as an individual with feelings, doing an honest job to put food on their table and a roof over their head.

At best, you could open their eyes to an opportunity they never dreamed of. And somewhere in between, even if they aren’t interested in another income stream, there’s every chance they would love more glowing health and wellbeing. And you can help them do that by joining Young Living as one of your customers.
