Of all the oils, frankincense feels most to me like Christmas — and I also rate it as one of the most legendary.  This post continues our series on The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture. (Please enter ‘scripture’ in the top right search box for posts on the other oils in this very beautiful spiritual and practical Young Living kit.)

Known historically for ‘curing everything from gout to a broken head’, we’ve already given our top 9 tips for this profoundly-beneficial essential oil. You can check them out here.  (I highly recommend it!)

When it comes to ancient scripture, frankincense is referred to often, and mentions like these give a sense of its value during those times:

“Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?” The Song of Solomon 3:6

“Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.” The Song of Solomon 4:16

There are several varieties of frankincense essential oil available in the marketplace, and sadly it is just as susceptible (if not more, due to its scarcity and expense) to inferior quality and synthetics being offered up as ‘pure’ frankincense essential oil. So as with all essential oils, we urge you to research and choose wisely to be sure you’re getting ‘the real deal’. You can learn why we choose Young Living essential oils with these short videos here and here.

The frankincense varieties currently available from Young Living are Boswellia carterii (traditional Frankincense, from Somalia/Yemen), Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense, from Oman) and Boswellia frereana (Frereana Frankincense, from Somalia).

Frereana frankincense has a composition quite different from Boswellia carterii and sacra, even though both its resin and those of Boswellia carterii come from trees found in Somalia.

Traditional Frankincense and Sacred Frankincense are more akin to each other and can be used beautifully in tandem to complement each other’s particular constituents. High in sesquiterpenes, both are known to be extremely uplifting, meditative and relaxing.

To learn more about the specific benefits of each of these frankincense essential oils, please look them up in a reliable reference source.  You’ll be glad to know how useful and soothing they are.  Inhalation and topical application are both great ways to use them, depending on whether you’re focusing on the soul or the body.

Young Living’s Sacred Frankincense is the first Omani frankincense to become available to people for use outside of a very small number of people within Oman. This came about through the unrelenting (and typical) passion and dedication of Gary Young over the course of 15 years towards negotiations to secure the first export permit for Boswellia sacra in Oman’s modern history.

Not only that, but he was given permission to build an Omani distillery, allowing unsurpassed quality assurance of the processing of this rare and treasured white resin.

Sacred Frankincense is believed to be the one taken to the Christ child. It is included in Young Living’s beautiful essential oil blends The Gift™ and Transformation™.

“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

Connections with ancient scripture aside, it is when you use these essential oils for yourself that you will really get a true understanding of why they are considered to be as special and uplifting as they are.  I hope you love them and benefit from them as much as I do.  They really do feel like a gift.

Enjoy the good oil daily.
