“Life is a moving, breathing thing. We have to be willing to constantly evolve. Perfection is constant transformation.” Nia Peeples

(Companion oil: Young Living Transformation™)

If I held up a flash card of a chrysalis, what’s the first word that pops into your head ?

I’m hoping you said, “Butterfly”, because I’m no psychologist and if you said, “Knitting,” I wouldn’t know where to go with that.

According to the dictionary, a chrysalis is

  • the pupa of a butterfly
  • the hardened outer protective layer of a pupa
  • a protecting covering
  • a sheltered state or stage of being or growth

The butterfly is often used as a symbol or metaphor for the transformative process or metamorphosis — the emergence from a tough shell of something beautiful and delicate with its tender new wings taking flight.

This process is made all the more poignant given how utterly different the butterfly is from its chrysalis — that hard protective coating which is often camouflaged to evade potential predators.

The pupation period for monarch butterflies is only two weeks.

The pupation period for humans can be years.

Our crusty chrysalis can build up slowly, as layers of disappointments, self-doubts and defensiveness settle one on top of the other and we build a protective coating around ourselves to obscure our true natures from others. Or worse still, from ourselves.

This kind of build-up of memories and stored negative emotions can eventually come to a head. When it does, we feel an innate urge to go through some kind of transformational process. It might be a slow build up, but the feeling will compound until we force ourselves to take action.

Sometimes, it’s voluntary, in the form of a ‘midlife crisis’ or motivated by a sudden shake up through a significant life event — an unexpected loss or a natural disaster.  You know, one of those things that moves people to say, “It makes you realise how important it is to live in the moment / seize the day / always tell the people you love that you love them.”

Or the realisation might be thrust at us by others, for instance when you’re told out of the blue, “It’s not you, it’s me!” Or perhaps more honest but less oft said, “It’s not me, it’s you!”

When you’re wanting to crack through your chrysalis, Young Living has an empowering essential oil blend for your cold-air diffuser called Transformation™. It was created from a combination of purifying oils, revitalising ones, and a little something to help your desired thought patterns to really get seated nicely.
