The first time you open a bottle of Young Living Highest Potential™, you might be surprised at its blueish colour — that is, once you open your eyes again after getting lost in the captivation of its beautiful fragrance.

In general, essential oils tend to fall somewhere between being colourless to various shades of brown, including honey-coloured, amber and deep toffee. (Suddenly, I have a sweet craving ! Better head to the kitchen and make a batch of Raw Nutty Sesame Balls.)

But there are a few essential oils which are blue thanks to a particular key constituent of the ‘azulene’ variety.

German chamomile/Matricaria recutita : 2-5% chamazulene*

Steam distilled from flowers grown in Utah and Idaho (on Young Living’s farms), Egypt and Hungary.

Blue cypress/Callitris intratropica : 1-2% guaiazulene

Steam distilled from leaves and wood of trees grown in Australia. Callitris comes from the Greek for ‘beautiful’ (calli) and ‘three’ (treis) owing to the triangular shape of the leaves arranged in whorls of three. Blue cypress is a key ingredient in the Young Living blend named Australian Blue™, a nod to its heritage.  Guaiazulene is created during the distillation process by a reaction between the bark and the heartwood.  Pretty neat, hey ?!

Blue tansy/Tanacetum annuum : 3-6% chamazulene*

Steam distilled from the flowering plant grown in Morocco.
