I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t love spending at least a little time at the beach.  Maybe if you’ve ever been stranded on a desert island, that would get it out of your system (and here are our tips for oils that would be perfect companions in that unfortunate case).  But aside from that?  Not likely!

And there’s something so laid back and relaxed about the idea of a seaside getaway that I feel like throwing togs, a towel and hat in the car and wish I could escape with packing little else.

But after one such getaway when I decided to travel super-light and leave my essential oils behind, I soon realised it was better to wear the same shirt more than twice in order to make sure my ‘must-haves’ were with me!

To save you from such an oversight and help you to travel light at the same time, I’ve put some thought into it and come up with three basics that will help you through a bunch of contingencies.  Yes, just three!

Lavender Essential Oil

We’re constantly cautioned to Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a Hat, Seek Shade and Slide on the sunnies.

But Australians are still way too slapdash in general when it comes to sun protection. We need to leave being blasé at home when it comes to sun smarts.  That big yellow orb in the sky is extremely intense and you’ll generally get enough Vitamin D in the warmer months from incidental exposure to keep your needs topped up. So don’t let that be your excuse.

When you’re knowingly heading out into the sun for anything past five minutes, thoroughly apply a good quality sunblock onto our exposed areas.  Be sure to use an ample quantity (follow the label).  And look for one that has physical blockers rather than chemical ones and free of as much of the nasty stuff as possible, such as parabens and synthetic fragrances.

Young Living has a beautiful lightweight, non-greasy Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for broad-spectrum protection with naturally derived plant- and mineral-based ingredients. Its active ingredient is non-nano zinc oxide, which is a physical UV blocker.  It’s full of hypoallergenic ingredients and free of things you don’t want.  Not only that, but it’s enhanced with skin-loving essential oils of frankincense, helichrysum and carrot seed.  (This item is not available in all markets but check if it’s on your NFR list – not for resale – for ordering outside of the States.)  Please click here to get our help with joining and ordering Young Living products.

For post-sun skin pampering, when you’re back out of the sun and freshly showered, add a couple of drops of Young Living lavender essential oil to the palm of your hand with a dollop of natural moisturiser and smooth over your arms.  Repeat the process with your legs and shoulders, back of the neck and chest – anywhere that’s been exposed to the sun with optional drying winds and sand abrasion.

Does your apartment have kitchen facilities?  Leave the moisturiser at home and borrow from the olive oil you brought along for cooking to create a lavender body oil.  Just be sure to use a good quality extra virgin olive oil.  You’ll find a little goes a long way.  The lavender and olive oil will leave your skin with a lovely herbaceous-smelling restorative and relaxing glow.

This blend helps ward off mozzies and insects, too, and provides a comforting sensation afterwards if a pesky bug has slipped through your net.

When walking on the beach barefoot or heading back over a scrubby salt-hardy rise, it’s easy to cop the odd scratch or knock from a broken seashell, gnarly bit of vegetation or piece of flotsam and jetsam.  Wash sand from the area, gently pat it dry, then apply a drop of lavender essential oil to help cleanse and nurture the location.

Authentic lavender essential oil such as Young Living’s smells divine and is great for sensitive skins and little humans.

It’s also relaxing and balancing, so if anyone needs TLC and is feeling upset, it will be comforting for their spirit, too.

Sometimes when we’re away from home, it’s harder to nod off and push up those Zzzzzs.  A drop of lavender on the pillow is a peaceful prelude to a good night’s sleep for all the family.  If you need something heavier duty, sip warm water with a drop of Young Living Lavender essential oil added.  Thanks to their impeccable quality and purity, you can add certain Young Living oils to food and drink, but please only ever use any essential oils this way if their label clearly says you can do so.  You’ll find Young Living Lavender is one such example.

Peppermint Essential Oil

At the beach, it’s easy to fall off the nutrition wagon and get carried away with a few treats.  Battered fish and chips, quickly-melting gelato, maybe a greasy kebab are just a few that leap into my head.  Peppermint essential oil is a great panacea to counter such overindulgences if you’re feeling a bit ordinary afterwards.  And if you really want to stay saintly, it can also help keep you focused on your clean food goals and give such foods a wider berth.

Inhale directly from the bottle or in the case of Young Living Peppermint essential oil (labelled as safe to add to food and drink), you can add a drop to a glass of water and sip it.  Heat the water to make a peppermint tea that’s vibrant and filled with a vitality you’ll never experience with dried herbal tea.

Young Living Peppermint essential oil is also fabulous for cooling and refreshing.  Sip water as described above if the temperatures are climbing.  Rub a drop into the calves of your legs for a fleeting arctic breeze.  Put a drop of peppermint essential oil in a bowl of water, dunk your bandana in it and tie this around your neck for a cooling sensation if you’re getting a bit hot and bothered.

And if your beach walking extended past your muscular comfort zone and you’re feeling a bit creaky, massage your legs with Young Living Peppermint essential oil (dilute with moisturiser or olive oil as needed) to perk up tired muscles.

Young Living Thieves Spray®

Young Living Thieves Spray® is a super-handy purse/pocket-sized bottle. It’s an awesome way to freshen surfaces any time, and great for travelling.  It’s not an aerosol so if flight is involved, no worries.  Just check that you’re still within the acceptable limits for carrying liquid.

Young Living Thieves blend is a proprietary combination of essential oils that legend has it, were used by rogues as a form of protection while they were doing their dastardly business of robbing from the dead.  While the origin sounds a bit gruesome, Young Living Thieves® blend smells deliciously fresh and spicy!  It’s the foundation of all Young Living’s safe and non-toxic cleaning products for the home and oral hygiene range.

When you take possession of your holiday accommodation, spritz the pillows and bedspread, loo seat and flush button with Thieves Spray® for peace of mind as to freshness.  We’ve all read those awful articles about hotel rooms and how slack and ineffective a lot of the cleaning can be.  Euww!

Spritz a tissue and rub Thieves Spray ® over the light switches and door knobs.  And leave the bottle in the loo as a non-toxic air freshener.  Bonus points for helping to avoid those awkward ‘after you!’ bathroom moments!

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.

Not all oils are created equal.  Far from it.  Quality varies immensely, so please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living.  Discover why we love them so much in this short video.
